Ritwika Ganguly is a visual artist from Kolkata, currently based in Vadodara. Trained in painting, her practice extends into video, animation, and projection-based work, evolving through processes of close observation, documentation, and temporal experimentation. Drawing from everyday encounters, gestures, and fleeting moments, Ganguly develops works that hover within zones of ambiguity, states that resist fixed moral or narrative judgment. Her methodology is rooted in sketching, note-taking, and audio-visual documentation, which later serve as archival material for paintings, drawings, frame-by-frame animations, stop-motion works, and video installations. Rather than foregrounding spectacle or overt storytelling, her works isolate minor, often overlooked gestures, those that exist at the threshold between acceptance and interrogation, allowing them to surface as quiet sites of reflection. Ganguly’s engagement with both analogue and digital media reflects a sustained inquiry into time, process, and transformation. Through labour-intensive techniques such as watercolour washes and hand-drawn animation, she bridges the gap between gesture and outcome, drawing and projection, mind and matter. Her practice seeks not to assign new meanings to observed realities but to strip away narrative excess, enabling everyday images to be encountered subjectively, shaped by the viewer’s own socio-cultural conditioning. Her work has been exhibited widely in India and internationally, including the Kochi-Muziris Students’ Biennale (2022–23), exhibitions with Anant Art (Delhi), Apre Art House (Mumbai), and Emami Art (Kolkata), as well as institutional presentations at Hong Kong Baptist University and LASALLE College of the Arts, Singapore. Her animation works have been screened at Emami Art Experimental Film Festival, Kunstraum Kreuzberg (Berlin), Erfurt, and NGMA Kolkata. Ganguly has participated in several residencies, including Kala Sakshi (New Delhi), Tropical Lab 18 (Singapore), FLAME University (Pune), and Khoj Peers Residency (New Delhi). She was awarded the Third Prize at the Art Futures Asia Awards, Hong Kong Baptist University (2023–24).
